Why proverbs and sayings
Short text mode uses 16 Korean proverbs and sayings. The shortest is eight characters and the longest about twenty-five, so each fits in a single breath. Because the sentences are familiar, reading takes little effort and your hands can focus on handling a complete line, punctuation and spacing included.
Each date has one sentence of the day, and every visitor types the same one. Finish it with at least 80% accuracy and you can pick a nickname and post your record to today's leaderboard. The "Other Sentences" button brings up one of the remaining sentences at random for free practice, but those runs do not count towards the ranking.
Sentence of the day and leaderboard rules
- The sentence of the day changes at midnight Korea time. It is picked by dividing the date (for example 20261010) by the number of sentences, 16, and taking the remainder, so on any given day every device gets the same sentence.
- While practising another sentence, the "Switch to Today's" button returns you to the ranked one at any time.
- The ranking button appears only when you finish the sentence of the day with at least 80% accuracy. Nicknames are 2–12 characters, and names containing profanity or words that impersonate the operators are rejected.
- There are daily, weekly (Monday to Sunday) and monthly boards. Each nickname shows only its best run for the period, and when speeds tie, higher accuracy ranks first.
- Weekly and monthly boards pool the records from each day's sentence. Registering more than 10 times in 10 minutes from the same place is blocked for a while.
- The nickname box starts filled with 타자_ followed by four digits, and once you register, your nickname is saved in this browser and filled in automatically next time. The boards group records by nickname, so if you pick a name someone else already uses, your records and theirs merge into one line. Choose a nickname that is yours alone.
Target speed and practice order
- In short sentences the first keystroke decides the record. Read the whole sentence once, then press the first letter; the timer starts with your first input.
- Every sentence ends with a full stop, and measurement stops the moment you type it. The full stop sits on the bottom row under the right ring finger and never appears in word practice, so check that your hand does not hesitate on that last key.
- Type the same sentence three times in a row and see whether your speed rises. If accuracy is still below 95% on the third try, slow down a notch.
- When going for the leaderboard, secure the 80% accuracy condition first. However fast you type, a run below 80% cannot be posted.
Where the sentences come from
Ten of the sixteen are Korean proverbs handed down by word of mouth, such as 가는 말이 고와야 오는 말이 곱다 ("kind words out, kind words back") and 백지장도 맞들면 낫다 ("even a sheet of paper is lighter with two"). The rest are sayings with a clear source. 배우고 때때로 익히면 또한 기쁘지 아니한가 is the opening line of the Analects, from the first book, Xue Er; 지나침은 미치지 못함과 같다 ("going too far is as bad as falling short") is from the Xian Jin book; and 세 사람이 길을 가면 반드시 내 스승이 있다 ("among any three people walking, one can be my teacher") is from the Shu Er book.
천 리 길도 발밑에서 시작된다 renders chapter 64 of the Tao Te Ching, 千里之行 始於足下 ("a journey of a thousand li begins beneath your feet"). It sits alongside the Korean proverb with the same meaning, 천 리 길도 한 걸음부터, so you can compare the two as you type. 아는 것이 힘이다 ("knowledge is power") is attributed to the English philosopher Francis Bacon.
Common questions about short text practice
- If I fix a wrong character, does my accuracy recover?
- Yes. Accuracy is calculated on your final committed input, so deleting a character with backspace and retyping it correctly turns it into a correct one. The live "gross errors" count stays, though, and the time spent fixing lowers your speed.
- Is 80% harder to reach on shorter sentences?
- Yes, because each character weighs more. 시작이 반이다. is eight characters including the space and full stop, so just two mistakes drop accuracy to 75%, below the ranking threshold. The 25-character 세 사람이 길을 가면 반드시 내 스승이 있다. still reaches 80% with five mistakes. On days with a short sentence, it is safer to correct mistakes as you go.
- Sentences of similar length give different speeds. Why?
- Speed counts letter parts, not characters. 티끌 모아 태산. is 9 characters and 17 strokes, while 백지장도 맞들면 낫다., with many final consonants, is 12 characters and 27 strokes. A sentence with more letter parts per character gives a higher speed for the same finishing time, but asks more of your fingers.
