Word Practice · Retype the letters you miss most

Why practise in words

If position drills teach where each key is, word practice teaches how letter parts flow into syllables. Typing words like 복숭아, where finals and vowels alternate, builds the left-right rhythm that sentence speed is built on.

The General tab shuffles 25 words from a list of 100, in a different order every time, so you cannot type from memory. The Weak tab unlocks once you have typed at least 30 strokes in total and have some typo history. It picks the five letter parts you miss most and serves 20 words that contain at least one of them. If fewer than five such words exist, it falls back to the general list.

Using the word practice screen

  • A General round is one line of 25 words joined by single spaces. Words in the list average 2.3 syllables, or about 5.9 strokes, so a round including spaces comes to roughly 170 strokes; at 200 strokes per minute it takes just under a minute.
  • When you choose the Weak Key Training tab, the five letter parts currently flagged as weak are shown just below it. Read them once before you start so you know what to watch today.
  • Press Esc mid-round to freeze the screen; time spent paused is left out of the speed calculation. Use it to take a call or fix your posture, then press Esc or the space bar to carry on.
  • The Retry button under the input box throws away the current round without saving and restarts the same line of words from the beginning; Try Again in the results window deals a freshly shuffled round. If tangled fingers ruin the first few words, restarting keeps your records cleaner than grinding on.

Target speed and a daily routine

  • First goal: do not pause at the space between words. Hit the space bar with your thumb while already looking at the next word's first letter.
  • Once you pass 200 strokes per minute (the 왕초보 grade), add one round of the Weak tab each day. As you focus on the same letters, their cells on the typo map fade.
  • Suggested routine: one General round to warm up, two Weak rounds, then one more General round to compare with your first speed. It takes about five minutes.
  • The 17 words with no final consonants at all, such as 바나나, 지우개, 코스모스 and 해바라기, alternate consonant and vowel between the left and right hands perfectly, which makes them good for finding a rhythm. Four-syllable words such as 할아버지 and 대한민국, by contrast, are good for practising seeing the whole word as one unit instead of stopping at each syllable.

How the word list is built

The 100 words fall into ten themes of ten: fruit (사과, 복숭아, 참외), school (연필, 지우개), computers and communication (마우스, 누리집), sky and weather (노을, 무지개), seasons (함박눈, 장맛비), family and neighbours, feelings (설렘, 보람), Korean food (떡볶이, 숭늉, 누룽지), flowers (진달래, 채송화), and country and outings (한강, 자전거). Two-syllable words are the largest group at 69, followed by 25 three-syllable words, 4 four-syllable words and 2 one-syllable words (귤, 감).

By letter parts, tense consonants that need Shift appear in only six words (딸기, 새싹, 아빠, 떡볶이, 제비꽃, 나팔꽃), and compound vowels in nine (사과, 참외, 의자, 화면, 전화, 희망, 된장, 무궁화, 채송화). Double final consonants and ㅒ·ㅖ never appear. If those are your weak spots, practise ㅒ·ㅖ in position drill step 11 and double finals in long text mode, which contains words such as 없다, 밟고 and 까닭.

Common questions about word practice

The Weak tab is greyed out.
Weak letters are calculated from your typo history, so you first need at least 30 strokes in total from the General tab or another mode. Records are stored only in this browser, so another device or a private window starts from zero.
How are the typo map and weak letters counted?
When you get a character wrong, the character you should have typed is broken into its letter parts and each part gets one point. If you type 승 instead of the 숭 in 복숭아, only ㅜ was actually wrong, but ㅅ, ㅜ and ㅇ all go up by one. So the weak list is best read as "letter parts inside the characters you miss most"; the more often you repeat the same mistake, the higher the truly weak part climbs.
Weak Key Training keeps showing the same few words.
It gathers every word containing at least one of your five weak letter parts and draws 20 of them at random. If your weak parts are rare in the list, such as ㄸ or ㅚ, the pool is small and the same words come up often; with fewer than 20 candidates you get only that many. With fewer than five candidates it draws from the full general list instead.
