Block Puzzle Strategy Guide

Knowing the rules is enough to start, but if your score plateaus at a few thousand, the bottleneck is almost always stacking technique, not speed. These five guides break that technique down one topic at a time. Read them in order or pick just the one you need.

One-Page Summary — Enough to Get Through Your First Game

The well is 9 columns wide and 18 rows tall. Four-cell pieces fall one at a time. When all nine cells of a row are filled, that row clears and everything above drops. When blocks reach the top and a new piece cannot spawn, the game is over. Your single job: make sure the rate at which you clear rows stays ahead of the rate at which blocks pile up.

Piling up is almost always caused by holes — empty cells trapped beneath blocks. A row with a hole can never clear until every block above is removed, effectively raising the floor. Two or three holes cut your usable height to fifteen or twelve rows, and the game shortens fast. The first skill separating beginners from intermediates is not speed but how few holes you create.

The fastest way to raise your score is to clear multiple lines at once. A single is 100 points, a double 250, a triple 450, and a quad 700, each multiplied by level. Four singles give 400, but one quad gives 700 — nearly double. As you improve, you shift from "clear whenever possible" to "wait and clear bigger."

For controls, remember two things: on desktop spacebar is hard drop; on mobile swipe up or the [Drop] button. This is the only irreversible move, so pausing to double-check before committing will noticeably cut mistakes.

Guide FAQ

Q. What order should I read the five guides in?

If you just started, read 'Rules & Controls' alone, then play a game. If your games end too quickly, read 'Stack Without Holes' next. If you survive but your score is stuck, 'Build a Quad' and 'Scoring & Levels' are the fastest path.

Q. Do I need fast reflexes to be good at this?

Not at low levels. At level 1 a block takes 0.8 seconds to drop one row, giving you several seconds of thinking time per piece. Speed only matters after level 10. Before that, placement decisions alone determine your score.

Q. Do tips from other block games apply here?

Stacking and surface management carry over directly. However, the well here is nine columns wide, and the rotation system only checks left-right kicks, so forcing a piece into a tight spot against a wall does not work. Details are in the 'Rules & Controls' guide.

Q. Will my in-progress game be saved while I read a guide?

Yes. Your game state is saved in this browser, so when you return to the game page you will see a 'Continue?' banner. Tap Continue to resume from exactly where you left off.
